That Sound is Driving Me Crazy! No! It really is!

I feel so validated to see this word finally describe what has been an insanely frustrating characteristic of mine. The only thing not listed on here, but found on another description, is cracking gum. This is also more common than I thought, but 6% of those with it have it to the extreme, which I’m sure I am one of. As I have aged I know my hearing is not as good as it used to be but in addition to these repetitive noises I used to have such a keen sense of hearing. For example once when my husband and I were sitting in our family room I told him I could hear water dripping somewhere. He didn’t believe me but to appease me he checked the kitchen and the front bath - nothing. Then he went into the back bathroom and the faucet had not been turned all the way off and was slowly dripping. He had to walk through the hall (which changed directions) and our bedroom to get to the bath. I always was in awe of people who could study while listening to music. To me that would have been impossible! I used to think it had to do with something in my brain and once I asked my mother if she used drugs when she was pregnant with me (even OTC) and she said something sarcastically which was a firm no. I asked her if my delivery was difficult and I did not get enough oxygen to my brain Another firm no. Yesterday my daughter gave me this word to describe it (I’m not sure why she held out on me with this.) I found this article that says it is a brain based disorder (I knew it!). So to all my friends and family who have witnessed me display any reactions, especially in public, there was a reason for it other than just being rude. And glaring often doesn't help by the way, although it’s my first reaction in an attempt to MAKE THEM STOP! I do have some stories where the glaring wasn’t enough and it led to anger and most definitely a faster heart rate and usually a direct request to knock it the hell off i.e. a group of students talking during a play, a girl stirring her iced tea in the airport for a good 5 minutes, my friend who sat in the next cubicle as me who cracked her gum nonstop all day, the guy in the back of a large college classroom who clicked his pen throughout the entire class, and many examples of people smacking their popcorn at the movies. Those are just a few by the way So needless to say that at almost 70 I feel very validated!! I knew I wasn’t crazy - at least not for this!
