My Valentine's Friend

I know I repeat this story every year. I wrote it about 10-12 years ago for a newsletter at work. But on this day I am reminded how important friends are and how blessed I am to have this woman as my dear dear friend. Love you Linda!

“I was a single mother with a five year old daughter. Without going into a lot of detail as to why, I ended up moving to another state with my daughter. I had no family and no close friends. I had been there six months and was pretty homesick and lonely. On Valentines Day (1980 to be exact) this girl showed up at my door with a plateful of heart shaped cookies. She was kind of assigned to visit me through a church program. But all that really was required of her was to stop by and say, “Hi, how are you?” Long story short…..she totally befriended me. She embraced my daughter and loved her like her own. We became very good friends and two and a half years later I was her maid of honor at her wedding and my daughter was her flower girl. Four months after that I wore her wedding dress when I got married and she was my maid of honor. And EVERY Valentine’s Day we tell each other “Happy Anniversary” to our friendship, which this year will be 45 years! So, my favorite Valentine’s Day isn’t about romance love, but about the love of a friend. A friend who stole my heart with a plateful of heart shaped cookies. A friend that reminded me about the warmth and goodness of people. A friend who loved me when I needed it the most. My Valentine’s friend!”
